How To Drink Wine Whilst Out At Sea
Wine really is one of those things that can be drunk in all places. In your back garden, on a meadow, or maybe at work if you’re lucky. You may even like to have a glass or two whilst going for a sail, in which case you should pay close attention as the information here may prove very useful to you indeed.
Keeping it chilled. If you are drinking red wine then you don’t really have to worry about temperature, just keep it below deck and it will be fine. It is a different story for champagne or white wine however, which really need to be served up with a nice chill to them...and this poses a problem on a hot boat. A great tip however is to use nature’s chiller and stick the bottles in the sea. You'll need a secure net to do this but a good thirty mins in the sea should see them nicely cooled. If you happen to be sailing around the Caribbean your wine may not get a chilled as you like...but never mind, you’re in the Caribbean.
Preventing breakages. Boats tend to move about a bit when they are out at sea and bottles can become easily broken. You should not only keep them as close to the centre of the boat as possible to reduce movement, but also secure them down well. If you place your wines in wine bags they act to protect them further and stop any liquid escaping if the bottles do break.
Getting the bottle open. Most people christen a boat by breaking a bottle over its hull, although you don't actually get to drink much of it opening it this way. Don't let any moisture get to the cork as this will cause it to swell up and make it a whole lot harder to get out. Also, don’t try to remove the cork by improvising with all manner of tableware or fishing hooks. Use a decent bottle opener and take your time. If you ruin this bottle, you may have a bit of a swim to get another.
The Fjord-Cooled Data Center (Slashdot)
1sockchuck writes "A new data center project in Norway plans to use a fjord-
powered cooling system, drawing cold water from an adjacent fjord to cool data
halls. The fjord provides a ready supply of water at 8 degrees C (46 degrees
F), eliminating the need for an energy-hungry chiller. The Green Mountain Data
Center joins a small but growing number of data centers are slashing their
cooling costs by using the environment as their chiller, tapping nearby lakes,
wells and even the Baltic Sea."
