Close Protection Training: The Bodyguard Team Roles, Part Two

Close Protection Team Or Personal Escort Section (CRT OR PES)

This is the group of close protection officers in the team who act in direct support of the personal protection operative. They'll form a protecting formation round the Principal and PPO and will most likely be accountable for directly handling any threat. They must have the ability to remain vigilant at all points and to be able to mix into the environment when needed. They are the eyes and ears of the PPO and should identify any potential problem at an early stage and either react as needed, or inform the PPO of the situation, if direct action isn't required at that time. They must be in a position to respond right away if needed, but unless the situation requires it, should not crowd the Principal causing irritation or embarrassment. A summary of their role is as follows:

Provide Direct Support To The PPO

To Take On Any Threat

To Maintain Continual Observation

To Assist The PPO In The Removal Of The Principal Not Involved In The Above

To Take And Act Upon Any Directives From The PPO

SECURITY ADVANCE PARTY (SAP)

The safety advance party is as the name says numerous agents who are deploying ahead of the main protection team. Again the number of personnel making up the SAP can change according to the dimensions of the team. This may be as low as one operative, but a minimum of 2 should be the littlest number used. The role of the SAP is to work ahead of the team travelling ahead

checking that the intended route is safe and clear. They're going to report on any issues with the route, which may have developed since the original survey, if one has been finished. This may cover such points as road works, traffic accidents, or any diversions as well as any suspicious activity, which they are going to check out. As a result of the data passed from the SAP the PPO may very well need to think about an alternative route. (Route surveys and planning are covered in a later module)

They will also arrive at the venue prior to the arrival of the key team and again will initially report to the PPO on the safety and circumstances at the time. If a big crowd is gathered if it is an official visit and what the demeanour of the crowd seems to be i.e. Friendly or antagonistic. They may pass on details of any press or photographers that are present and how best to avoid them. An affiliate of the SAP should be in a position to enter and check the inside of the venue before the arrival of the Principal and remain within till the team have arrived and delivered the Principal safely inside.

When working with a big team there might be 2 SAP units working together. One travelling a little distance ahead of the Principal and the other might have checked the route some hours before and be waiting well in advance at the venue. The SAP units should try to remain as undercover as possible as if they are recognised for what they are they can alert any waiting party regarding the approaching arrival of the Principal.

A remit of the commitments of the SAP is as follows:

To Advance Ahead Of The Primary Group Checking On The Safety Of The Route And Location Before Arrival Of The Key Party

Report Any New Intelligence Or Problem To The PPO

To Secure The Location Before The Arrival Of The Principal

Upon Arrival Of The Principle The Sap May Remain In Support Of The Close Protection Team If Needed.
