An Overview Of Various Domestic Water Treatment Technologies

There are many types of home water filters available today and they have become somewhat a necessity because it is hard to tell if the water coming from the tap is free of biological and chemical contaminants. In the next paragraphs are a few of the more popular domestic water purifications systems nowadays.

Distillation

In such method, water is heated to a boil and the resultant water vapor is cooled to the point of condensing back to liquid form which is then stored for later use. Although able to remove a broad range of contaminants, herbicides and pesticides which have boiling points lower than that of water, are still carried into the condensate and usually in a more concentrated form.

Ion exchange

This system moves water through ion-exchange resin membranes to soften it. This system can effectively get rid of toxic heavy metals such as copper and lead by replacing them with either sodium or potassium. However, on its own it simply is not able to adequately eliminate bacteria and virus. For this reason, in most cases it is connected to other water purification technologies.

Carbon filtering

This water filter system uses activated carbon to remove contaminants and impurities like chlorine, sediment, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from water. Compared with ion exchange systems, carbon filtration systems typically cannot take out the unhealthy mineral load of water.

Reverse Osmosis

This method removes many types of large molecules and ions from water by using pressure to pass it through a selectively permeable membrane. The pore structure in reverse osmosis membranes is so small that it is capable of rejecting a broad range of impurities. On the downside, these membranes are often too restrictive that it can yield only a gallon for every 10 gallons processed. To be practical, some households store the waste water to be used in the toilet.

Ultraviolet Treatment

This water purification technology kills infectious organisms in the water as it come into contact with an Ultraviolet lamp. The good thing about this method is that no chemical substances are used to treat the water. However, as a standalone system it cannot remove large particles, colloids or ions.

Which system should I buy?

As you've probably deduced from reading this post, a water filter system has its inherent limitations in terms of what impurities it can get rid of. For this reason, they are rarely used as standalone systems. Reverse osmosis coupled with a top-notch carbon filtration system is adequate at eliminating a wide range of impurities. When shopping for water filters, consider what style fits your needs and budget. You can find filters that look like pitchers which are the cheapest of the bunch, as well as faucet mounted, counter-top, under-sink, or whole-house variants. It would also be wise to verify the claims made by a manufacturer by checking if they have been certified by a reputable independent agency. Looking at testimonials will also uncover problems other customers may have about a certain water filter system.
