Living In A Very Little Home
You can still visit the huge homes and castles built and occupied by royalty worldwide. Today, though, it is not just kings and queens who line in castle size home, it is people just like you and me. However, there are also more and more people who not only live in small homes but choose to live in very very small homes.
These tiny homes are all over the place. Certainly in large cities like Tokyo and New York where space is at a premium, you can find many minute living spaces. People who choose to live in an urban area often have to settle for having less space than those who live rurally. However, sometimes, especially as we become more environmentally conscious, there are those that are choosing to live in tiny homes.
A Yale grad student is currently living in his van to save money while in school. A company that makes and sells tiny homes called Tumbleweed Tiny House Company is doing very well selling homes ranging in size from as large as 837 square feet to as small as 65 square feet. In urban areas, you can find people choosing to live in apartments ever smaller and smaller.
There are many advantages to these homes. The main benefits are cost savings, low carbon footprint and easy maintenance and upkeep. You don't have to spend nearly what you would to take care of a larger home and you save time as well when you clean. Spend a little more on some top of the line equipment like the Dyson upright vacuum cleaner and you'll have your place cleaned in no time and never have to worry about buying another vacuum.
Little homes can be made very comfortable and even made to seem more spacious than they actually are. Interior design experts an advice you on the best use of your space. A quick browse online will also come up with many tips and ideas for you to utilize the space you have. One idea is to hire a furniture maker to create multi-purpose pieces like sticking book shelves right into the frame of your sofa. You can also save money by not getting central heating or central air. Once again, purchase a nice heater, a Delonghi space heater is a good choice, and your home will be toasty without the large bill associated with a central unit.
You can not only save money by buying top of the line but, sometimes, you can save by not buying necessarily the best things. It is doubtful that you will have many dinner guests if your home is tiny so, why spend on fine china or even steel pots and pans. You can get really nice stuff like an anodized cookware set that doesn't cost as much but does the job.
Living in a tiny home is not for everyone. In fact, some people would probably be driven crazy. But, for those who are willing and able, it is a great time, money and environment saver. Plus, it can be very pleasant and enjoyable if you know how to do it right.
What is a Really Good Skillet or Pots and Pans Set?
I am looking to purchase a really nice skillet for my mother for her birthday. I have been really looking into getting her a COOKS 12 inch Anodized Skillet that is over-safe and guaranteed for life. I was wondering if that was a good idea or not. I have bought many different skillets for her and all of the eventually start to stick. Any advice is welcome. Thank you. I will be sure to choose a best answer!
Personally, I do not like any of the nonstick cookware: eventually the coating will deteriorate or whatever happens to it and some sticking will occur. Well seasoned cast iron is a better solution for the way that I cook; I have a couple of stainless steel professional saute pans that also work well.
The deal with nonstick coatings is if you heat them to very high temps, the coating will emit a toxic gas that will kill your canary pronto and leave the rest of the family feeling "flu-ish" ... headachy, nausea, etc. Too often the absent minded cook will want to preheat the frying pan before searing meat, or whatever, and the empty pan reaches very high temps ... nice for searing food but not good for human beings.
Why don't you get your mom a gift certificate for a restaurant supply house or gourmet cookware store (Willi*ms Sonom* in the mall, for one) and let her choose?
