A Short History of The Hot Water Bottle
It surprises me how much you can find out by carrying out simple research.
I wanted to find out if the hot water bottle has progressed much over the years.
I was astounded to discover that hot water bottles were used back as early as the 16th Century. Of course back then they didn't have any resemblance to today's hot water bottles. The principle remained the same and they were placed in the bed to warm before getting into bed.
During the 16th Century the earliest versions of their hot water bottle contained hot coals and not water. The coals would have been taken from the dying embers of the fire and placed in their equivalent of our hot water bottle. The container with the coals would then have been placed in the bed to warm through. Over the years, it amazes me how things progress. Who could have predicted that we would now be using a piece of rubber material filled with hot water to keep our beds warm!
It wasn't long though before hot water was used instead of coals. A variety of different materials had to be used for bed warmers back in the 16th Century as rubber was yet to be invented. Amongst the materials used were wood, copper, zinc and glass. Naturally with these materials being used, there could have been a big problem with scalding of the body. To combat this, the bottles had to be wrapped in a soft cloth bag.
It was in 1830 that Charles Goodyear the inventor created a vulcanized rubber. This was fantastic as now there was a material that could withstand heat without melting. This led to the invention by Slavoljub Eduard Penkala, who then went on to patent the very first hot water bottle. We must say a huge thank you to Slavoljub, it really was a great invention.
In these modern times, it fascinates me how many wonderful designs we have to choose from for our hot water bottles. We can now choose from Heart Shaped Bottles, Knitted Covered Hot Water Bottles and even a Monster Hot Water Bottle. I wonder where we might be in the next 100 years.
One thing though that remains the same throughout the years is we like to have a nice warm cosy bed to sleep in and I personally don't think that is ever going to change.
