Capillary Melting
Chemistry lab experts, please help me with Melting point problem?
Describe errors in procedure which may cause an observed capillary melting point of a PURE compound to be:
(a) Lower than the correct melting point
(b) higher than the correct melting point
(c) broad in range
I can't understand this question. Please help.
Usually the temperatures for melting, boiling, freezing, etc depend directly on the current air pressure. A higher air pressure will pack the molecules closer together, making it easier to freeze the substance. Therefore, at higher pressure, the freezing point rises. On the flip side, a lower air pressure will make it easier for the molecules to be more spread out, which will make it easier for the substance to evaporate; at a lower pressure it is easier to boil the substance.
